Dangers of using Styrofoam and a new method for handling waste Styrofoam (recycling)

Polystyrene is actually still quite plastic family. Polystyrene plastic material composed of polymers, namely a long chain of smaller units called monomers which is a plastic forming material.  Polystyrene is a petroleum based plastic made from the styrene monomer. Most people know it under the name Styrofoam, which is actually the trade name of a polystyrene foam product used for housing insulation. Polystyrene is a light weight material, about 95% air, with very good insulation properties and is used in all types of products from cups that keep your beverages hot or cold to packaging material that keep your electronic device safe in package during shipping.

Furthermore, in this article, I will call Polystyrene as Styrofoam as it most people know.

The biggest environmental health concern associated with Styrofoam is the danger associated with Styrene, the basic building block of Styrofoam. Styrene is used extensively in the manufacture of plastics, rubber, and resins. Styrene is the cause of acute health effects are generally irritation of the skin, eyes, and upper respiratory tract, and gastrointestinal effects. Chronic exposure affects the central nervous system showing symptoms such as depression, headache, fatigue, and weakness, and can cause minor effects on kidney function and blood. Styrene is classified as a possible human carcinogen by the EPA and by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).

In addition to negatively health affect, Styrofoam unfriendly environmentally. Because itsn't recyclable in nature, the amount of styrofoam will accumulate so it can contaminate water and soil. Styrofoam recycling process that has been done so far is really just to destroy the old styrofoam and then shaping it into new styrofoam and use it again.
But this time has found better metode of processing styrofoam waste. This method is called recycle waste with waste, we will just use orange peel waste that is still fresh. This method was discovered by 2 high school student in Tangerang-Indonesia, named Vici & Andrienne accompanied by his teacher.

Here are the steps :
  1. Chop the orange peel that has been collected into small pieces.
  2. Then blend it and squeeze the orange peel. Or use a juicer so that we do not need to be squeeze it.
  3. Collect the juice in a bowl. Enter the styrofoam that has been cut-scissors into a bowl of lemon peel. Look at what happened, styrofoam will decomposes by the juice. (Cause elements of the existing de limonene in orange peel)
  4. To increase the quantity of the juice you can perform a chemical process.

Hopefully this article can be useful for the readers, and hopefully to motivate the other "Vici & Andrienne", younger generation who care about the environment in order to save the world.
